It was a night filled with celebration
at the Retail Council of Canada’s
(RCC) 2013 Excellence in Retailing
Awards (ERA) Gala in June, as our
Loss Prevention team was named
winner of the Loss Prevention award
category – their second win, having
also won in 2010.
Each year, RCC honours the very best
in retail innovation and creativity at
the annual ERA Gala. These awards
bring together the top talent in the
Canadian retail industry to recognize
the year’s most innovative retailers,
Retail as a Career Scholarship
recipients and Awards of Distinction
winners.
Accepting on behalf of Loss Prevention
and the Risk Management Department
were Antonio Caivano, Rick
Elliott, and Troy B. Durand.
Loss Prevention’s successful submission
highlighted the battle against fraudsters
who were purchasing tickets through
our mobile app with stolen credit cards
and reselling them, either in person, or
through social media.
In collaboration with other corporate
stakeholders including, Finance, IT,
and Operations, the LP team and
the Risk Management Department
launched an initiative that’s main
objectives were:
• To protect the company’s reputation;
• To educate guests about the risk of
buying tickets, or booking information,
from others;
• To minimize further losses to
Cineplex by deterring unauthorized
purchases; and
• To identify suspects and where possible
provide suspect information to
the police.
What made this initiative successful?
It was the collaboration of several
departments at Cineplex that quickly
executed and created a system to
deter fraud and financial loss to the
company. Also, the initiative was
rolled out just as credit card fraud on
the mobile app was burgeoning, and
in time to prevent what could have
been significant losses.
