GUEST letters

Colossus
Langley
Cinemas
I wanted to take time to thank
Cineplex for excellent service Friday
night. For the first time I redeemed
points from SCENE so my husband
and I could see a movie on our
anniversary. I have never had problems
on your online ticketing site so
I thought nothing of redeeming the
points on-line. We redeemed the
points but never received the ticket
e-mail. We sat on hold with SCENE
for over 30 minutes and never got
to talk to an actual person when my
husband’s phone died.
Thankfully, and I apologize because
I thought I had remembered his
name (David R.) the manager on
at Colossus Langley Friday night
printed us tickets even though I
had no proof we had redeemed the
points. They were taken because we
only had 570 points once we got to
the theatre. I have e-mailed SCENE
with my concerns and expressed
that we were quite embarrassed
with the whole situation. The manager
at Colossus explained that the
server might be backed up and he
understood our predicament. He
was very kind even though he had
no idea if I was telling the truth. I
worked in the retail industry while
in university and I know how people
try to talk their way out of things.
We appreciated his kindness, calmness
and understanding. I hope
that he is recognized for this as the
situation could have been much
different, especially since it was a
Friday night and quite busy.

I want to compliment the manager
or assistant manager at Cineplex
Queensway. I was a little unclear as
to his title due to my own distraction.
The gentleman was welldressed,
very polite, and incredibly
cordial. He addressed my concern
(it related to the projection of the
UntraAVX film), and has ensured I
will visit his theatre over others in
the area.
You are very lucky to have him on
the team. I’m not entirely sure how
this online form will work - however,
you should send him my thanks if it
is possible.

My friend and I try to go to movies
at least once a week and have an
awesome time. When we purchased
our popcorn today, we were served
by Alisha B. She was so kind, sweet
and constantly smiling. She also
asked a question that I had never
been asked before.
“Do you want ice in your Fruitopia?”
I was so surprised and declined the
ice happily. Such a simple thing
really made me very happy. Please
make sure to give her my thanks
and to keep up the good work!
(Apologize if I spelled her name

I had a wonderful experience attending
a movie this weekend at
one of your Cineplex locations. As
an avid (almost weekly) movie-goer
I’m used to the “ticket tearer” (door
attendant) just tearing my tickets,
and half of the time they don’t tell
you the movie location (i.e. floor),
irrespective of it being busy or not.
However, this attendant informed
me of the movie location, concession
location and also let me know
that the concession stand on the
upper floor, where my movie was
playing, was not open. The latter
being very convenient as many
times you go up two floors to have
to come back down again to purchase
your food and/or beverages.
It was a small thing but it was
the first time I felt like the door
attendant was efficient, pleasant,
and genuinely concerned about the
customer’s movie experience.
Although I didn’t get the name
of the employee I just wanted to
extend a “thank you” for his great
customer service.

The road to TIFF begins at Cineplex

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will feature two
important cinematic contributions made by Cineplex employees.
For the first time, members of the Entertainment Content team wrote,
shot and produced both the TIFF Volunteer and Midnight Madness
trailer spots, which will be played prior to all featured films at the
festival. The trailers, which were written by Cineplex’s Andrea Miller,
Rachel West, and Rob Lazar (who was also director and producer
on both trailers), celebrate the 2,500 TIFF volunteers who bring the
festival excitement to life.
The TIFF Volunteer trailer, endearingly called “Dancing in the Streets,”
stars Michelle Mylett with a veritable who’s who of Hollywood dance
movies referenced throughout and is set to the grooves of Katrina and
the Waves, “Walking on Sunshine.” The Midnight Madness trailer (or
“It’s Alive”) features a twisted take on the classic Frankenstein story. A
spot made specifically for the 25th anniversary of Midnight Madness; it
stars Lars Classington as Igor and Andrew Kines as the Mad Scientist.
Titles were provided by Adam Beck and colour corrections made by
Charles Noseworthy, both from Entertainment Content.
In addition to this, Cineplex produced this year’s TIFF print ads
in-house with the help of our design team, including Mike Lucas,
Todd Haskins, and Kyle Wagg. Cineplex is also the official sponsor
of the TIFF Volunteer Programme and will provide all 14 screens at
Scotiabank Theatre Toronto for use during the festival.
To view the trailers, visit our Movie Blog at Cineplex.com after TIFF
officially kicks off on September 5.

Cineplex digital signage featured in new Ontario highway rest-stops

If you find yourself travelling along
Ontario highways 400 or 401, be
sure to stop at one of the 19 newly
redeveloped ONroute Service
Centres to view the handy work of
Cineplex Digital Solutions (CDS).
Not only has CDS already installed
an approximate 228 screens
within the service centres, it will
also be responsible for maintaining
and creating content for the digital
signs on an ongoing basis.
Ontario Tourism kiosks are another
feature of the new ONroute centres
– the signage and interactive
content will also be maintained
by CDS. To complete this truly
full-service offering, Cineplex
Media is responsible for selling the
advertising space on the digital
signage within these Centres.
The Ministry of Transportation
of Ontario manages 23 service
centres along Highway 401 from
Windsor to the Quebec border, and
along a portion of Highway 400
north of Toronto. The Government
of Ontario has partnered with
Host Kilmer Service Centres to
redevelop 19 ONroute locations.
The newly modernized service
centres provide travellers with
modern, safe and accessible
facilities at which to rest, eat and
refuel, 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, year round.

Cineplex honoured at Retail Council of Canada’s 2013 Excellence in Retailing Awards

It was a night filled with celebration
at the Retail Council of Canada’s
(RCC) 2013 Excellence in Retailing
Awards (ERA) Gala in June, as our
Loss Prevention team was named
winner of the Loss Prevention award
category – their second win, having
also won in 2010.
Each year, RCC honours the very best
in retail innovation and creativity at
the annual ERA Gala. These awards
bring together the top talent in the
Canadian retail industry to recognize
the year’s most innovative retailers,
Retail as a Career Scholarship
recipients and Awards of Distinction
winners.
Accepting on behalf of Loss Prevention
and the Risk Management Department
were Antonio Caivano, Rick
Elliott, and Troy B. Durand.
Loss Prevention’s successful submission
highlighted the battle against fraudsters
who were purchasing tickets through
our mobile app with stolen credit cards
and reselling them, either in person, or
through social media.
In collaboration with other corporate
stakeholders including, Finance, IT,
and Operations, the LP team and
the Risk Management Department
launched an initiative that’s main
objectives were:
• To protect the company’s reputation;
• To educate guests about the risk of
buying tickets, or booking information,
from others;
• To minimize further losses to
Cineplex by deterring unauthorized
purchases; and
• To identify suspects and where possible
provide suspect information to
the police.
What made this initiative successful?
It was the collaboration of several
departments at Cineplex that quickly
executed and created a system to
deter fraud and financial loss to the
company. Also, the initiative was
rolled out just as credit card fraud on
the mobile app was burgeoning, and
in time to prevent what could have
been significant losses.
